The Thames & Kosmos CHEM C3000 is an advanced level chemistry set for older students.
This set is a great tool for anyone to use to learn more about the science of chemistry, and all of the materials that are needed for the nearly four-hundred experiments are included in the kit.
The CHEM C3000 is an excellent gift for kids and even adults who love science.
What Do I Get?
Inside the Thames & Kosmos CHEM C3000 you will find a wide range of supplies, including professional grade test tubes, an alcohol burner, chemicals that are needed for the experiments, and a guide. The guide is the most important part of the chemistry set. It covers each experiment in detail, ensuring young learner are able to perform the experiments properly to get results. There are also color photos of the experiments, which is a great way to see if your results are the same as the photo. You also get safety gear in the chemistry set. Safety gear is an absolute necessity when working with chemicals, so this is really a complete set.

With the Thames & Kosmos, you may need to purchase some extra chemicals, such as lye. Most of the materials are very simple to get, and are available at hobby and craft stores or even discount or grocery stores nationwide. If your child loves chemistry, it is worth the expense of grabbing a few extra ingredients to ensure their experiments turn out great. Many of these ingredients are also used for other crafts, such as soap making, so any extra supplies can just be used for another at-home science experiment.
Age Group
The CHEM C3000 is definitely for older students, such as those from grades seven and up. The chemistry set can be used for many years to come, however, since there are both simple and advanced chemistry concepts covered in the experiments.
Older students will be able to prepare for college level chemistry with this set, while high school and junior high aged students can use the materials as a standalone curriculum for homeschool. The manual covers safety, experimentation, and some of the basics theories of chemistry, as well.
This chemistry set is great for teens and preteens who love science, and can even be given to kids to instill a love of chemistry. Some experiments do require adult supervision, even when older teens are using the equipment. For example, materials such as sodium hydroxide can cause burns if handled improperly, and the alcohol burner can cause burns, as well. If you are willing to work with your child on some of the experiments, however, this set can really develop a deep understanding of chemistry while still being fun enough to draw kids into learning time and time again.

By Sliderulex… I have a couple of chemistry sets, such as the Microchem 5000, which is a surprisingly in-depth set. But this set, the Chem3000 is the best chemistry set I have ever seen, or used. The manual, coupled with the actual labware makes this set a serious tool for a budding chemist, or for someone who really wants to learn some general chemistry but doesn’t have the time or resources to go to college.

My brother used to create his own experiments and caused a few fires because of it…..I did not want my son doing the same thing so we figured this would be a great. The instructions a step by step; as detailed as to even setting up your work area. As parents we are learning stuff too. THIS DOES REQUIRE ADULT SUPERVISION and IS NOT A TOY!
The Bottom Line
The Thames & Kosmos is strictly for kids that are over twelve. Younger kids may be frustrated by the difficulty of the experiments. You will also need a few extra supplies, but these are simple to grab locally. Overall, CHEM C3000 is an excellent educational toy that most kids will love and at the same time give them a good basic grounding in chemistry.
